The theme of this story and the basis of the characters revolve around ambition. Ambition among men thriving for power was a necessary quality in order for them to gain status in society, but when Alexander realized his wife carried as much ambition as he did conflicts arose. Rose however has limited knowledge of this when she travels to France to marry Alexander de Beauharais. Women were trained and expected to keep their opinions to themselves and not share their thoughts on political matters. Growing up in Martinique under the influence of mainly women (due to her fathers addictions), Rose begins to notice earl on the effort put forth by women that went unrecognized by the men in their family. by Sandra Gulland, the main character Rose de Beauharnais (Josephine Bonaparte) is driven by ambition to gain not only her independance but rights as a woman during the 1700's.
